The study focuses on the reusability of the fine fraction of MSW (portion less than 4.75 mm) by replacing the soil with MSW fines in embankment fill. To check the suitability of MSW fine as embankment fill material, stability and settlement analysis has been performed by using Geo5 and Plaxis2D software, respectively. The design of a 5 m high embankment with a local soil cover of 0.5 m is proposed for a 4-lane road near the same landfill site (Ramana, Varanasi) from where the MSW sample was collected. The numerical modelling of the embankment predicts the settlement and stability of the road embankment under traffic loads, which were found to be within the permissible limits. Although this is just a preliminary study, an extensive exercise is required to check its suitability. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
