An asymmetrically CPW-fed octagonal Sierpinski fractal antenna is designed for ultrawideband applications. It comprises of a second iterative fractal radiating patch, microstrip feedline and asymmetrical coplanar waveguide ground planes. An impedance bandwidth of 3.73 GHz to more than 20 GHz is achieved. Stable radiation patterns and desirable gain characteristics are observed. The simulated and experimental results are found to be in good agreement. The designed antenna structure has advantages of wide bandwidth and miniaturized dimensions over already reported UWB antenna structures. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
