Abstract

The inhibition of copper corrosion in 1,5% NaCl solution containing various concentrations of diethylamine, diethyldithiocarbamate and its Cu(II) complex has been investigated at 298, 308 and 318 K. Inhibitive properties have been evaluated by weight loss and electrochemical polarisation techniques. All three additives have been found to be efficient inhibitors of copper corrosion, even at a concentration as low as 10 ppm. The difference in the inhibition efficiencies of the three inhibitors is not very considerable but the optimum concentration for maximum inhibition efficiency varies from inhibitor to inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency invariably increases with increase in the temperature of the system. It is apparent from the results of the present investigation that diethylamine is predominantly an anodic inhibitor while the rest of the two inhibitors are acting as mixed inhibitors.
