The copper (Cu) is used in many heat exchange, electrical and electronics applications for its good thermal and electrical conductivity. In addition, copper have other attractive properties like corrosion resistant and antibacterial properties. However, these properties of copper can be vanished upon its corrosion in aggressive chloride environments. The present work report corrosion behavior of black leather dye (LBD) coated copper substrates in 0.5 M NaCl. The coating of copper has been done by drop casting. The investigation is carried out through UV–visible spectroscopy (UVS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), open circuit potential curves (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Tafel polarization curves (TPC) and optical microscopy (OM). EIS and TPC propose that LBD coated Cu perform better than bare copper substrates in NaCl solutions. The OM results are in accordance with the fact that coating has been successfully formed on copper substrates and protective in nature. In the view of obtained results, LBD is recommended for corrosion prevention of Cu in NaCl. © 2022
