Abstract
As things stand, the international community has failed miserably in its efforts to avert conflicts, and the United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising crisis prevention around the world. Since the importance of mediation in this context cannot be overstated, the Security Council seeks to reinforce the United Nations’ mediation capacity by launching a campaign, both at Headquarters and in international organisations on the ground, as part of an overarching call for a greater emphasis on diplomacy for peace at the international level. The campaign will be part of an overarching call for a greater emphasis on diplomacy for peace at the global level. Among other areas of competency, this chapter analyses how the United Nations deploys its talents to promote mediation, drawing on experience from across the three symbols of progress and human rights, peace and defence (among other areas of competence). Additionally, the five components of mediation support are discussed, as well as specific instances of United Nations operations within each component. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
