This work focuses on the assessment of the potential of leather dye Acid Yellow 2GL in integrated treatment system by ozonation and adsorption using brinjal waste. A perfect experimental design based on central composite design (CCD) with response surface methodology (RSM) was done. The effect parameters, i.e., pH of the solution (5–10), adsorbent dose (3–5 g/L), operation time (5–10 min), and dye concentration (30–80 mg/L), were studied for the removal of Acid Yellow 2GL dye by brinjal waste integrated treatment system. The optimum condition for predicted maximum dye removal was 97% at pH 5.007, operation time 9.99 min, adsorbent dose 3.006 (g/L), and dye concentration 30.06 (mg/L). The study reported that first-order kinetic model, i.e., monolayer adsorption, showed better alignment compared to second-order kinetic model and the mass transfer study revealed that film diffusion is the rate-limiting step for dye removal. Electrostatic attraction, pi–pi interaction, hydrogen bonding, and physical adsorption were the probable mechanism for the adsorption process. The estimated cost (Rs. 230/kg) for the removal of dye by integrated treatment system has also supported the process to be adopted by the leather industry due to cost-efficient process. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.
