Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to conduct an extensive analysis of existing literature about the seismic behaviour of skew-reinforced concrete box-girder bridges. The study aims to assess un-retrofitted and retrofitted skewed reinforced concrete (RC) box-girder bridges under seismic conditions, shedding light on their vulnerability and potential improvement strategies. Various factors significantly influence the response of bridges to earthquakes. These encompass skew angle, curvature angle, the presence of in-span hinges (whether single-frame or multi-frame bridges), boundary conditions (including the presence or absence of shear keys and the level of restraint), superstructure flexibility, the direction and intensity of seismic motion, abutment type (seat or integral), soil characteristics, and foundation-base conditions. These aspects can impact box-girder bridges’ structural integrity and resilience during seismic events. The study intends to discern the limitations of existing knowledge and methodologies in this field by critically reviewing prior research. In addition, it aims to offer valuable insights that can guide future research endeavors. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
