Abstract

The paper presents the physico-chemical characteristics and suitability of the shallow and deep groundwater body occurring at Zamania, a southern part of the Ghazipur district, India. Samples of groundwater were collected in pre- and post-monsoon periods Partial chemical analyses of the water samples collected show that the groundwater of the area is alkaline. Bicarbonate ions among anions and magnesium ions among cations are dominant constituents. It has been found that the concentrations of anions and cations are little higher in the dugwells. Concentrations of anions and cations generally decrease in the post-monsoon samples. This may be due to dilution of groundwater by the infiltration of surface run-off and sub-surface flows from irrigated fields. It is found that the effected wells are both tubewells and dugwells. The suitability of the groundwater in the area has been assessed. For proper development of the water body, a few recommendations have also been made.
