Abstract
Kinks or loops are formed in cables, subjected initially to torque and tension, in underwater and other applications due to a critical combination of torque and tension, resulting from sudden slackening of the cable. Subsequent reduction in slackness tightens the kink often resulting in failure of the cable. In the following paper the mechanics of kink formation is dealt with and the critical tension-torque relationship established. From the analysis presented, kink length is also evaluated. © 1990 by ASME.
