Abstract
Microbes are either unicellular or multicellular organisms that can be present almost everywhere, even in extreme temperature conditions (i.e., thermophiles, psychrophiles), in a wide range of pH (i.e., acidophiles and alkaliphiles), in high salt concentration (i.e., halophiles), etc. Although they are very much beneficial for us, but some of them might cause diseases or other problems. Considering their crucial role in our lives, their culturing and identification techniques are of utmost importance. Since way back in time, these methods are being progressively developed from conventional Gram staining to the most advanced MALDI-TOF. Thus, in this chapter, we will discuss all these techniques, from conventional methods to advanced molecular methods and automated identification techniques. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
