| dc.description.abstract | Cancer-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT) poses a significant clinical challenge, as it is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. This review explores recent developments in our understanding of CIT, focusing on both challenges and advances in its diagnosis and management. The intricate interplay between cancer and platelets, leading to thrombocytopenia, is dissected, emphasizing the role of various mechanisms such as bone marrow suppression, immune-mediated destruction, and the release of prothrombotic factors by tumor cells. Diagnostic modalities, including novel biomarkers and imaging techniques, are discussed for their potential in early detection and accurate assessment of CIT. In the realm of therapeutic interventions, we delve into recent breakthroughs in targeted therapies, immunomodulatory agents, and innovative treatment strategies tailored to address the unique aspects of CIT. Additionally, the review also highlights chemotherapy-induced and immune-checkpoint inhibitor-induced thrombocytopenia. The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between oncologists, hematologists, and other healthcare providers is emphasized to optimize patient outcomes. As we navigate the evolving landscape of CIT, this comprehensive review aims to provide clinicians and researchers with valuable insights into the current challenges and promising advances in understanding, diagnosing, and treating cancer-induced thrombocytopenia. Through continued research and collaborative efforts, we strive to enhance the care and prognosis of cancer patients grappling with this complex hematologic complication. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024. | |
