Abstract

The study of power electronic converters’ reliability is essential for the uninterrupted operation of contemporary power systems. Semiconductor devices are one of the converter components most susceptible to temperature changes. The performance of converters in various applications, such as contemporary power systems and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines, is also significantly impacted by random chance and wear-out failures. Catastrophic failure and wear-out failure have been addressed briefly. The condition monitoring of temperature-dependent electrical parameters is covered in the chapter to identify faults before junction temperatures reach dangerous levels. The reliability modeling of power electronic converters, HVDC systems, wind farm systems, and modern power systems are also discussed with mission profiles, historical data, and Markov’s models. © 2024 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
