Abstract

The handling of radioactive waste has become a priority due to the significant environmental and health hazards it presents. This chapter explores the origins of nuclear technology, beginning with Marie and Pierre Curie’s discovery of radioactivity. The subsequent development of nuclear technology led to an increase in waste generation and the need for regulatory frameworks. Waste is categorized into two types: high-level waste (HLW) and low-level waste (LLW), which dictate the methods used for its disposal. Segregation is crucial, as it allows for the categorization of waste according to its radiation levels and half-life, ensuring safe treatment. Management techniques involve the handling, transport, and disposal of substances to prevent any form of environmental pollution. In summary, effective management is essential for protecting both human health and ecosystems. This chapter is an valuable resource for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners involved in the management of radioactive waste. © 2025 Scrivener Publishing LLC.
