Many of the innovations in new materials have been driven by needs of aerospace, defence, automobiles, chemicals and electronics industries. In general, new materials are first developed for defence and aerospace applications, and are commercialized later. Powder metallurgy (PM) forming is currently arousing interest in many parts of the world, as an economical and reliable method of producing sintered components. Materials in form of sintered preforms not only deliver better physical, chemical and thermal properties, but also in many cases make new applications possible. The present paper concentrates on requirements of sintered preforms or products keeping in view, the needs of aerospace and defence components. How the above materials or preforms deliver value to components, along with current research and development issues have been explained. The production and application of improved composite powders and new technologies like advanced die-wall lubrication system, CNC presses with multiple punches etc have also been discussed.
