Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) based continuous supervision of electric power grid components has a great contribution in widespread power grid monitoring as per the security and reliability is concern. Moreover, Intentional Controlled Islanding (ICI) is a common strategy adopted by system operators to operate the power grid efficiently. In this paper, Modified Symbiotic Organism Search (MSOS) has been proposed to deploy the PMUs optimally for healthy operating condition as well as intentional controlled islanding mode. Complete observability is satisfied by the proposed method for both of the operating mode. The proposed method has been extended to detect the faulty line unobservability after optimal deployment of PMU. This efficient method has been applied on IEEE standard test systems- 14 bus, 30 bus and 118 bus, to test the efficacy of it. © 2025 IEEE.
