Synchronisation of hamming coded data streams

Abstract

Synchronization words are appended to the data streams for marking the boundaries of frames of data. When error control coding is in use, structure of the code can be employed to recover the synchronization without appending any sync word. The concept is elaborated by theorems and simulation results for (7,4) Hamming coded data streams. Syndrome patterns are continually searched for a specific pattern correlation, used for marking the boundaries of the encoded words. Some bits are, however missed before synchronization. The effect of channel errors is also discussed limited to the error correcting capability of the code.
