Abstract

Power reliability has become a necessary demand in modern society. Integrating different energy units (PV energy, wind energy, and energy storage systems) into the grid is increasing at a very high rate to serve this purpose. Microgrids are a technology that can provide reliable and efficient energy to meet increasing demand. Planning and design play a crucial role in achieving all the benefits that this technology may offer. Reliability-oriented design is particularly relevant for microgrids that use a significant portion of distributed energy resources based on renewable energy and integrated with power electronics. This chapter discusses microgrid types, control technologies, and their reliability enhancement techniques. The importance of reliable components in power electronics converters for system reliability is discussed in this chapter. © 2024 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
