Structural, electromagnetic, and Ku-band absorption characterization of La-Mg substituted Y-type barium hexaferrite for EMI shielding application

| dc.description.abstract | This work describes the synthesis and characterization of lanthanum and magnesium substituted Y-type barium hexaferrite to examine its potential as an EMI shielding material in Ku-band frequency. The structural, electromagnetic, and EMI shielding properties of La–Mg substituted Y-type barium hexaferrite, Ba2-xLaxCo2-xMgxFe12O22, where × = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, & 0.5, synthesized by the sol–gel auto-combustion method, were investigated. The synthesized ceramics were sintered at 1050 °C for 2 hrs. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize the ceramics. The grain size and densification were dropped while the permeability and permittivity were improved with the increasing concentration of La-Mg. The scattering parameters (S11, S21, S12, and S22) of the ferrite samples were measured in the Ku-band frequency range (12.3–17.5 GHz), and their electromagnetic shielding properties were studied using a vector network analyzer (VNA). The investigation of shielding effectiveness depicted the increment of reflective shielding efficiency (SER) and better overall shielding efficiency (SET) with the increasing La-Mg concentrations. Based on the obtained results, Ba1.5La0.5Co1.5Mg0.5Fe12O22 ferrite showed the best candidacy for electromagnetic suppression or other high-frequency applications. © 2022 Elsevier B.V. | |
