Thermal characteristics of the three dimensional turbulent wall jet with and without sidewalls
Abstract
Effect of sidewall on the thermal characteristics of a three dimensional turbulent wall jet with a square nozzle is explored experimentally. The mean and fluctuating quantities are presented through temperature decay, thermal half widths and temperature fluctuation. It is observed that the decay rate of centerline bottom wall temperature of without sidewall is almost half than the corresponding case with the sidewall. The sidewall influences the temperature variation drastically. As a result, the asymptotic nature of temperature is lost. Also, the thermal half width in wall normal direction varies non-linearly as compared to the linear variation for the case without sidewall. The side infiltration is more dominant than the top infiltration in the near field region for both the cases. But, the sidewall plays an important role in suppressing the fluctuation at the far downstream locations. In addition, several correlations are proposed for the mean thermal parameters of the three dimensional turbulent jet. © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS
