Abstract
For declamatory scale execution of wide area measurement systems (WAMS) using synchronizedphasor measurement units (PMUs) and phasor data concentrators (PDCs),gives a new direction to the power systems in terms of protection, monitoringand controlling. PMU technology provides the both magnitude and the phase angle in real time with sure accuracy. It helps the system analysts during autopsy of power system to ascertain thesuccession of cases which headed to themalfunctions and blackoutsleading in failure of the power system. In this paper, the effectuation prospects of phasor measurement units and the architecture of the data assembling and management scheme essential for effective exercise of the data offered by PMUs have been studied. Also, the concept of frequency estimation and phasor estimation techniques with nominal and off-nominal frequency inputshave been discussed.A case study has been performed by developing a MATLAB model of phasor measurement unit using non-recursive and recursive discrete fourier transform (DFT) algorithm to get the required phase and magnitude of the signal. © 2018 IEEE.
