| dc.description.abstract | Bionanomaterials are any materials of nanoscale that have the ability to interact synergistically with the biological system. Recently, nanoparticle-based drug delivery has gained enormous attention in various areas of nanoscience and nanomedicines. Owing to their size on the nanometre scale, nanoparticles have brought a revolution in drug delivery and surmounted the various challenges of drugs such as solubility, less bioavailability, poor intestinal permeation, and so forth. Their surface area to volume ratio and ability to engineer their surface, either by attaching the ligands for the targeted drug delivery or using polymers in order to sustain them in circulation for extended drug delivery, makes them different from the conventional systems. This chapter presents an overview of the polysaccharide-based natural bionanomaterials used in drug delivery and in various disease conditions.
