Proteomics has revolutionized the field of biomarker research by enabling the large-scale protein identification and quantification of complex biological samples. Shotgun proteomics and targeted proteomics are two major approaches used in biomarker discovery and validation. While both methods have their own strengths and limitations, understanding their differences is crucial for selecting the most appropriate strategy for research. This chapter provides an in-depth comparison of shotgun vs targeted proteomics in context to biomarker research. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
