Abstract

This study investigates the design, creation, and implementation of a metasurface antenna (MSA) specifically engineered for 5G connectivity. The MSA is constructed in conjunction with a simple microstrip patch antenna, yielding a realized gain of 4.5 dBi. This is achieved by utilizing a substrate made of Rogers RT Duroid 5880 at a frequency of 25.8 GHz. Elevating the design further, a two-layer 4×4 order metasurface (MS) is introduced, resulting in a substantial gain enhancement to 9.91 dBi. The antenna's dimensions are specified as 0.6 λ0×0.6 λ0×0.5 λ0, where λ0 represents the free space wavelength at 25.8 GHz. The overall 4×4 MSA showcases an impressive maximum efficiency of 86% at the aforementioned frequency. The exceptional performance of the proposed antenna presents a promising trajectory for future 5G implementations, adeptly addressing the multifaceted demands of diverse applications in the realm of next-generation wireless networks. © 2024 IEEE.
